What’s the difference between zakat and charity?
I previously posted a question asking whether it was haram to give charity to non-muslims, and some answers said that charity can be given to non-muslims, but zakah can only be given to muslims. Ummm aren’t they the same thing? Zakah IS charity, isn’t it?
Similarities: Both zakat & charity are donations made to the unfortunate ones either by giving them food, money or clothes & so forth.
Differences: Zakat is a type of donation that we can only donate to unfortunate Muslims & no one else.
In other words, it is also known as a "religious charity".
Also, the zakat donor must be a Muslim in order to be eligible for giving zakat.
As for charity, it is a donation that we can donate to any unfortunate individual regardless of their race, language or religion & there is absolutely no prerequisites at all for a donor to be eligible for giving charity.
Zakat is Cumpolsury chrity is optional

Why must the compulsory charity be only for Muslms? Why not make it for anybody that needs it?

Zakat is much more then Charity. It is providing freedom to somebody that is oppressed. It could be freedom from debt but it can also apply to many other freedoms It is the opposite of Riba (oppressing or enslaving) If you provide Relieff for another human.
It is not about money or percentages or tax to the Mosque etc. Zakat the way I understand it can only be applied to a human being no "mosques" or organization qualify.
